Evolving the Cocoa Promise
Setting a clear direction for improving farmer and community livelihoods
We have evolved the Cargill Cocoa Promise to become even more focused on one, overarching objective: improved livelihoods for farmers and their communities.
To make this more tangible, we have set ourselves a clear direction towards 2020:
Improving farmer livelihoods
- An increased number of Cargill Cocoa Promise farmers with measurable improvements in profitability, primarily achieved through better yields
- All Cargill Cocoa Promise farmers benefit from training and coaching, following their own Farm Development Plans
- An increased number of Cargill Cocoa Promise farmers benefit from using crop protection, high-quality planting materials in plantation regeneration, and fertilizer appropriately

Improving community livelihoods
- All children in Cargill Cocoa Promise communities are protected from the worst forms of child labor
- An increased number of Cargill Cocoa Promise communities benefit from income that mothers and other women are earning – as farmers or as entrepreneurs
- An increased number of Cargill Cocoa Promise communities will benefit from well-run primary schools
- All Cargill Cocoa Promise communities will benefit from good nutritional practices
Measuring results is key, and represents a major step forward in our approach. We know that by measuring what we do we can continuously learn and improve, ensuring that our programs are effective, relevant, and impactful.
This is why we have invested in a strong Monitoring and Evaluation system, and have a Results Framework to analyze our impact.
