Egg production and quality
Eggs are a nutritious and versatile source of protein around the world. Cargill invests significant resources to help producers and retailers offer eggs that meet consumers’ expectations.
Our laying hen facility at our Innovation Campus in Elk River, Minnesota focuses on technologies that can improve our customers’ profits. There they study a range of production parameters such as percentage lay per day, egg weights and shell strength. In addition, studies are conducted to create the yolk color, egg shell color and specific gravity that are desired by various markets.
Helping customers succeed through collaboration
Cargill helps lead hen housing study coalition
Cargill is a member of the leadership committee of the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES), a U.S.-based group of universities, food companies, government agencies and other stakeholders that are concerned with raising safe, affordable food. CSES has embarked on a collaborative, commercial-scale study to evaluate three different housing systems for egg-laying hens. The study seeks to scientifically determine an egg production system that balances animal health and well-being, food affordability and safety, worker safety, and environmental stewardship. The result will be meaningful science-based data that will help guide future production and purchasing decisions.
