Cargill joins Indonesia's national greening movement One Man, One Tree.
Cargill joined the One Man, One Tree national green movement with senior executives participating in the Ceremony of Indonesia’s Day of Tree Planting and Month of National Planting Year 2009 – “One Man, One Tree”. The ceremony was presided over by H.E. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, president of Indonesia.
The One Man, One Tree program was launched in 2009 by the Ministry of Forestry Republic of Indonesia to help combat the impact of climate change and preserve forests. The Indonesian tree planting efforts have been in process for several years and are ongoing. It’s estimated that more than 280 million trees have been planted in Indonesia since 2007 with almost 80 million trees planted in 2009.
Cargill seedlings, planting and care
Cargill will contribute over 200,000 trees to the One Man, One Tree program, with part of the seedlings coming from the company’s own nurseries. Cargill employees in 10 provinces where the company has operations volunteer to help with local tree planting. Cargill will also ensure that these newly planted trees receive appropriate care for three years. Seedlings have either been planted or will be planted in the North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and West Java provinces of Indonesia.
At Cargill, we believe corporate responsibility is a process of continually improving our standards, our actions and processes. Notes Lucy Tjahjadi, Cargill Indonesia country representative, “A sustainable future requires investment of our time and resources today. The Government of Indonesia has taken the lead to tackle climate change issues with the ‘One Man One Tree’ movement. Cargill will play its part in supporting this important initiative, as part and parcel of our corporate responsibility commitments."
