Cargill’s Bulk Food Salt Value
Cargill Salt Group has a long legacy of excelling in business to business operations, which has successfully moved millions of tons of bulk food salt each year for more than 50 years.
Cargill Salt Group has a long legacy of excelling in business to business operations. We started producing food-grade salt in 1966, and for more than 50 years, our production capacity and supply chain has grown with our expertise in creating a variety of bulk salt solutions for our customers. Today, Cargill operates seven food-grade salt plants in the United States, with products ranging from sea salt to our famous Alberger® cut.(1) Between our Mini Bulk and Bulk food salt packaging options, we have over 100 different product offerings in various sizes and salt types to fit our customers’ needs. Beyond holding ourselves responsible to deliver an assured supply and quality products, however, Cargill also recognizes the vast responsibility that comes with operating a business of this scale. That’s why we’ve committed to pursuing a sustainable supply chain that enriches our customers, our employees, and their communities.
Cargill Salt’s Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
Cargill Salt’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint is not only the right decision for the preservation of our planet, but it also creates supply chain efficiencies that will cut costs for our customers long-term. These investments in our future began with tangible goals that we’ve been able to monitor and deliver on.
- Improvement in Freshwater Efficiency – In FY17, Cargill made a 5% improvement in water-use efficiency, meeting our goal for 2020 three years early. This is due to large scale production modifications at our plants that upgraded water management processes.
- Improvement in Greenhouse Gas Efficiency – In the last fiscal year, greenhouse gas intensity was improved by 11.5%, putting us well on track to meet our goal of 17% improvement by 2020. This achievement was a result of taking coal units out of service in our business, and today, all of our coal facilities have been converted to natural gas.
- Investment in Energy Efficiency – We continue to make improvements in energy efficiency to ensure wise resource usage to mitigate the impact of energy costs for customers.
Cargill Salt’s Social Sustainability Initiatives
The diversity of our supply chain is yet another way we offer distinctive value to our customers – by fostering economic growth in the communities they serve. Today, Cargill Salt Group works with over 3,000 diverse suppliers, but we are continuing to take steps to diversify our suppliers even more. Our goal is to have a supplier base that reflects the communities in which our employees and customers live and work. To do this, we have increased our commitment to purchase from diverse small enterprises that are certified as minority-owned and women-owned businesses by providing an equal opportunity to bid to meet our procurement needs.
- Supporting diverse businesses – Cargill Salt has committed to participating in local and national organizations dedicated to stimulating the economic growth of minority-owned and women-owned businesses.
- Seeking diverse businesses – We encourage our employees to support small businesses and businesses owned by women and minorities when seeking additional sources of supplies or services.
- Advising diverse businesses – Cargill’s Strategic Sourcing and Supplier Diversity divisions strive to expand upon developmental programs for women-owned and minority-owned businesses in the forms of monthly workshops, ad hoc educational sessions, etc. These programs cover a wide range of topics in order to help bolster the success of small businesses by leveraging our industry expertise.
When it comes to producing, transporting, and delivering millions of tons of bulk food salt annually for our customers, Cargill Salt understands that our business is about much more than just salt. We’re dedicated to adding value in every element of our supply chain to improve the lives of the people and communities we impact. Through something as simple as salt, we’ve found we’ve been able to make large scale improvements in social and environmental sustainability that will continue to benefit our stakeholders long-term.
