Nature Conservancy grant helps protect key area of the Amazon. Cargill expands responsible sourcing program in Brazil.

Soy is a major global source for vegetable oil and animal feed and global production has increased substantially to satisfy a rise in demand to meet the world’s changing food habits.  Since the beginning of last decade, Brazil has become one of the world’s largest exporters of soybeans and its rapid soy expansion has created a greater need to protect the important and complex ecosystem of the Amazon.

As a global purchaser and processor of soybeans with operations in Brazil, Cargill recognizes the need to respect and protect sensitive environments by supporting sustainable soy production. This is why we are working with farmers, industry partners, communities and non-governmental organizations to develop lasting solutions that promote sustainable agricultural practices and encourage responsible economic development.

Explore the dimensions of responsible soy production

Ensuring responsible soy production in the Amazon

  • Since July 2006 when Cargill joined other leading Brazilian soy processors to agree the Soy Moratorium, we have committed not to purchase soy from lands that have been deforested in the Amazon Biome after this date.

Promoting sustainable practices amongst soy farmers

  • Our partnership with The Nature Conservancy to support farmers in the Santarém region to use sustainable farming practices and comply with the Brazilian Forest Code has become a model for government conservation efforts

Supporting the development and promotion of sustainable soy

  • We are supporting a number of sector-wide initiatives and undertaking own efforts, along with international NGOs, to encourage sustainable soy production

Respecting and engaging with the local community in Santarém

  • Since we established our soybean terminal in Santarém, we have been committed to meeting all the necessary requirements, as well as respecting and contributing to the local community.
