Fiber enrichment

Boosting nutrition with fiber innovation

While national and regional guidelines do vary somewhat around the world, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends fiber intake of minimum 25g per day. However, this number is rarely if ever met by the average consumer.

Cargill recently conducted a study with 3,082 respondents in France, Germany and the UK regarding sugar reduction and fiber. This proprietary research found that only half of European consumers are certain they are consuming enough fiber. Other key insights from the research include:

  • Greater part of respondents indicated that they knew there was a daily recommended intake, but that they were not aware of how much it was.
  • 56% of respondents who are aware of the daily fiber intake (n=2179) are worried about not reaching the recommended amount.
  • The main reasons cited for underconsumption of fibers included a lack of knowledge of which products are high in fiber, not enough products with a high fiber content and worries about the side effects of too much fiber.

In general, typical diets across the globe do not inherently contain enough fiber to meet the 25g threshold. One of the ways to close the fiber gap is to fortify products with new solutions like Cargill™ soluble fiber and CitriPure®. These label-friendly solutions enable fiber enrichment and sugar* and calorie reduction while helping Nutri-score optimization.

Cargill™ soluble fiber

Cargill™ soluble fiber are plant-based and label-friendly ingredients helping manufacturers answer consumer demand for sugar reduction and fiber enrichment while improving the nutritional profile of food & beverages. Available in both powder and liquid forms, Cargill™ soluble fiber is made using exclusively licensed micro-reactor technology that was developed in partnership with Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute for Technology. This results in soluble fibers containing a minimum of 80% fiber content, with low color and low off-taste.

The Cargill™ soluble fiber can help to achieve minimum 30% sugar reduction and complements Cargill’s sugar reduction toolbox by offering a unique set of properties and benefits that serve as label-friendly sugars replacer bulking agents.
