The Most Sought After Foods are Those with No Artificial Ingredients and No Preservatives

At a time when the "free-from" trend is surging, 60% of consumers are checking lists to that they can avoid potentially undesirable ingredients.

The “free-from” trend is one that has captured the attention of food manufacturers, foodservice operators, and retailers — and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon.1 According to Innova Market Insights estimates, the “free-from” market has gained rapid prominence in 2019 and is projected to be worth $899 million by 2021.2 This trend is largely driven by increasingly health conscious consumers who are demanding simple ingredients rather than “artificial ones”.1

The majority of consumers say they’re extremely or very likely to check ingredient lists when purchasing packaged food or beverages for their households.3 Though 39% of consumers are doing this to seek out certain ingredients, such as sea salt or kosher salt, 60% of consumers are checking lists so that they can avoid potentially undesirable ingredients.3

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 15 million Americans struggle with food allergies, such as a gluten allergy in people with Celiac disease.4 While a growing number of shoppers need to avoid certain food allergens, many consumers are voluntarily opting into a “free-from” diet.4 The ingredient lists on packaged foods are now more relevant than ever before as the average consumer is searching to avoid certain components and longer ingredient lists.3

In findings from their 2018 biennial Food and Beverage Study, L.E.K. Consulting highlighted that at a time when the “free-from” trend is surging, the most sought after foods among Americans are those with no artificial ingredients and no preservatives.5 With this in mind, it’s no surprise that many food manufacturers in the U.S. are increasingly launching products each year with “no additives” or “no preservatives” claims.6

This is why at Cargill Salt, we have a wide variety of additive-free salt offerings to help customers achieve their “no additives” goals. As a leader in food safety and quality, Cargill works to ensure the integrity of our products and maintains a versatile supply chain that delivers the right products at the right time.
