What caused the recall?
We receive loads of corn into our plants on a regular basis. Corn containing higher-than-acceptable levels of aflatoxin was delivered to our plant in Lecompte, La. Aflatoxin is a result of mold. We wish to stress that the recall was not the result of any reports of animals getting sick.
Why did Cargill not catch the elevated aflatoxin levels?
Aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit were discovered during routine testing by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. After the state’s test results were disclosed to us, we conducted an investigation and discovered a problem with one of the materials we use for our own testing.
How can I tell if the products I have purchased are subject to this recall?
If you have been feeding your dog River Run or Marksman dry dog food, check our product recall list and photos.
What should I do if my dog has consumed a recalled product?
Please call your veterinarian if your dog exhibits sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, or yellowing of the eyes or gums.
Why does the recall cover dog food that is up to a year old?
We are recalling all River Run and Marksman dry dog food that was made at LeCompte, Louisiana since Dec. 1, 2010, in order to remove any potentially affected product from the marketplace.
Can I get a refund?
Return any unused portion of the recalled dog food to the store where it was bought for a full refund.
How can Cargill be sure it won't happen again?
We have made sure our tests are working properly and no longer underestimating aflatoxin levels. We have validated our testing program and are cooperating with the FDA and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture to investigate the aflatoxin in the corn.
