Cocoa and Chocolate in Brazil
From plantation to consumer
Besides following directly the harvests, the teams analyze almonds samples to determine their properties, such as size, level of fermentation, humidity, fat content and pH. The same care that is present at the origin of the almonds can be observed in the factories. The company has adhered to the most strict rules of food production and packaging in their productive units in Brazil: as far as in the cocoa processing factory, in Ilheus (Bahia State), as well as in the chocolate production and compound in Porto Ferreira (Sao Paulo State).
At Cargill’s productive units, no commitment is more important than producing safe food. Everything is tested according to international regulation. In Cargill’s Safety Food Program, HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) is entirely implemented and integrated to ISO 22000.
The whole productive process is constantly evaluated and documented in order to assure the products’ traceability, from raw material to end customer. Not only the processes, but also employees’ knowledge and experience are tested and accredited. All of it in order not to leave any doubts about the excellent quality and the assured safety of the ingredients that the company produces. From the cocoa plantation to the products delivery to the clients, Cargill concentrates on providing consumers with even more positive and delicious experiences.
Rising together
Cargill recognizes that its continuous success depends on the vitality and natural resources conservation and the development of cocoa producers. For the company, corporate responsibility is a commitment that involves the entire corporation and the communities where it is present, in the sense of facing the complex economic, environmental and social challenges.
The company encourages the development of sustainable economy, provides a positive contribution to the communities and promotes responsible business practices in their production chains. In Brazil, it has close bonds with the producers in the fight against witches' broom (Crinipellis perniciosa (STAHEL) Singer) which in the beginning of the 90’s entirely destroyed cocoa plantations, damaging the Brazilian production and hitting farmers especially in Bahia State.
