Carrageenans
Discover an ocean of texture possibilities with one INCI name.
Carrageenans are water-soluble polysaccharides that are extracted from red seaweed. Carrageenans are widely used in the personal care industry for properties like gelling, thickening, stabilization, water-binding, and they provide a wide variety of textures while maintaining one single INCI reference.
Carrageenans are classified in three main types: kappa, iota and lambda, depending on the number of sulfates present in the polysaccharide chain. This difference on the chemical structure will determine if the carrageenan will have more of a thickening or gelling behavior. Kappa and iota carrageenans can give gel structures and as a result are known as gelling carrageenans, while lambda is a thickening carrageenan.
All the carrageenans in our portfolio are 100% nature-derived and are readily biodegradable. Learn more about this ingredient.
Satiagel™ VPC 614
INCI: Chondrus Crispus Extract (China) or Carrageenan (EU/US)
Satiagel VPC 614 kappa carrageenan is a gelling agent that provides high viscosity and solid textures, resulting in strong, rigid gels, especially in combination with potassium ions. Satiagel VPC 614 kappa carrageenan is specifically suitable for solid formulations like solid shower gels or biodegradable cooling patches.
Satiagel™ VPC 508
INCI: Chondrus Crispus Extract (China) or Carrageenan (EU/US)
Satiagel VPC 508 iota carrageenan is a gelling agent that provides medium to high viscosity and elastic gel textures in combination with salt. Satiagel VPC 508 iota carrageenan is cold and warm processable which provides the final formula with a fresh sensory and high transparency. It is the perfect match for applications such as hair styling gels, skincare products or facial masks.
Satiagum™ VPC 430
INCI: Chondrus Crispus Extract (China) or Carrageenan (EU/US)
Satiagum VPC 430 lambda carrageenan is a thickener that provides low to medium viscosity with a long flow. Satiagum VPC 430 lambda carrageenan is cold dispersible and processable and is compatible with electrolytes and surfactants. It is specifically suitable for fluid formulations such as face serums where it improves glide, lowers friction and has a fresh sensory and pleasant film-forming effect.
