Ranging from ‘A’ (dark green) to ‘E’ (red), the Nutri-Score label displays a food product’s nutritional quality in a quick and easy-to-read way. Supported by the World Health Organization and the EU Commission, it is quickly gaining significance across Europe since first being introduced in France in 2017.

How does that affect you?
When it comes to chocolate products, nutritional information ranks 4th place (after flavor, price and ingredient familiarity) in the decision-making process, with 60% of consumers finding it important. Also for the rather indulgent chocolate products, more than one third of shoppers would consider the Nutri-Score in their purchase decision. That doesn’t mean that consumers expect a “green rating” (in fact, every second consumer would still buy a chocolate product with a rating of D or E) but any improvement in the Nutri-Score rating that is displayed on the front of pack can have a positive impact on purchase intent. This rings especially true when compared to neighboring products without a score or a lower score. Still, the nutritional improvement of chocolate products can be a challenge.
