Paints
Cargill is a leader in the industrial coatings industry, developing paint additives derived from renewable sources. With deep experience in a wide range of renewable feedstocks, knowledge of the market, technical expertise, and a global manufacturing footprint, Cargill is uniquely positioned to create successful paint solutions for customers to meet various product goals. By leveraging Cargill's portfolio of bio-based chemistries and customized solutions, paint formulators can enhance the use of renewable resources without compromising on performance or cost.
Binder components
Cargill offers a broad range of renewable ingredients for binders and film formers, providing many advantages over mineral oils including low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, increased plant-based content and low toxicity.
Cargill's portfolio includes drying, semi-drying, and non-drying vegetable oils such as linseed oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, as well as reactive modified vegetable oils and distilled fatty acids. These oils perform numerous functions, from film formation to modification of various resin properties.
Industrial vegetable oils
A wide variety of vegetable oils are available within the Cargill portfolio, including linseed, soybean, canola, coconut and sunflower. Cargill's reliability and quality have been demonstrated over decades of use in the paints and coatings industry, across the globe.
Glycerin
Cargill's glycerin is a versatile ingredient serving a variety of purposes in coatings formulations to achieve desired performance and application properties.
Reactive modified vegetable oils
Cargill's extensive polymerized vegetable oils portfolio provides an expanded use of renewable resources, and important functional benefits as binders and modifiers for a variety of coating applications. Polymerized oils can help improve substrate adhesion, durability, and UV stability of formulated coatings.
Fatty acids
Cargill's fatty acids are integral ingredients in paints and alkyd coatings, providing formulation versatility to help formulators achieve performance targets for coatings.
Additives
Cargill's portfolio of bio-based coatings additives can help coatings manufacturers increase renewable content while optimizing performance.
Cargill's coatings chemistries include various additives to enhance paint application properties. Our products include Oxi-CureTM coalescing agents, lecithin emulsifiers, VikoflexTM plasticizers and more.
Bio-solvents
Solvents are widely used in industrial and consumer applications. Unfortunately, many of the useful features of solvents are served by chemicals that are hazardous to human health, environmentally damaging or pose serious safety hazards.
In response to these general concerns as well as industry legislation, there is steady growth in the use of bio-solvents. Bio-solvents are derived from natural, renewable feedstocks. Cargill bio-solvents have a higher flash and fire point, compared to petroleum-based products, helping facilitate safer handling and storage of the product. Bio-solvents represent a small but growing contribution to solvent use.
Cargill's bio-based solvents offer alternatives to traditional petroleum-based solvents. For example, CargillTM Agri-PureTM bio-solvents are a viable alternative to white spirits, kerosene, liquid paraffin, and other low-to-medium hydrocarbon oils. They are compatible with most metals, plastics and rubbers.
