Plasticization

Plasticizers are defined as relatively high molecular weight, low volatility, low extractability solvents for polymers. They interact with the polymer, absorbing into and solubilizing the polymer and altering the polymer morphology.

Plasticizers are beneficial for various reasons. They can be used to make formulations softer and more flexible, less brittle, more elastic, and reduce the melting point and melt viscosity.

Plasticization additives include both monomeric and polymeric plasticizers that work to increase the plasticity or fluidity of a polymer. Plasticizers are particularly useful in PVC, but can be used in other polymers such as synthetic rubbers, synthetic rubber derivatives, and other polar polymers such as polystyrene and ABS.

Syncroflex™ Plasticizers

Cargill offers both monomeric and polymeric plasticizers as part of the Syncroflex™ range. Due to their small size, Syncroflex™ monomeric plasticizers offer the benefits of increased physical and mechanical properties through rapid absorption and adsorption to the polymer surface. Syncroflex™ polymeric plasticizers help to prevent migration and weathering over time which is ideal for applications where long-term stability is needed.

Biovero® Plasticizers

Today's consumers expect environmental consciousness as well as flexible PVC products that perform.

Cargill has created a bio-based plasticizer that meets the rigorous regulations for the PVC industry without sacrificing performance or profitability. The Biovero® plasticizer solution is derived from bio-based feedstock and includes sustainability benefits, flexibility, and high efficiency.

Vikoflex® Plasticizers

For customized applications, Vikoflex® plasticizers provide unique characteristics to help PVC products perform at a greater range.

Cargill’s Vikoflex® plasticizer is a bio-based plasticizer that delivers sustainability benefits and is used in custom applications such as plasticization, stabilization, acid scavenging and viscosity. A higher oxirane content paired with a lower viscosity provides increased light and heat stability of products that use Vikoflex® plasticizers. Additionally, Vikoflex® plasticizers can help PVC product perform and stay flexible at lower temperatures.
