Service and Equipment Solutions
Given the complexity of the paper- and board-making process, our product solutions need to be combined with technical support, lab tests and equipment consultancy to ensure successful results. Starch solutions will only perform at their best when they are properly cooked (if cooking is needed), when the enzymatic or thermochemical conversion process and system is correctly applied and set up (if conversion is needed), when they are dosed in the correct place within the paper machine, and when the interactions with other paper additives have been properly evaluated, and monitored.
Technical support
Our experienced technical team will support customers in the selection of the best starch solutions based on the performance targets, cost to treat requirements, sustainability objectives and plant capabilities.
When introducing a new solution, a plant audit at the customer mill by our technical experts is the first step to ensure that all relevant details are collected (starch slurry and paste properties, cooker/converter settings, additives, infrastructure etc.) and samples for lab tests are taken. When all the parameters and lab results are available, the most suitable product solution is identified together with the starch processing and dosage required. A short production trial from 25kg bags is then set up to prove product performances. If successful, a longer production trial from silo takes place. Cargill experts will assist the customers during the trials by advising on starch cooking/conversion properties, machine settings and paper/board evaluation. Once the solution has been implemented, Cargill experts will continue to providing support with trouble-shooting and technical requests.
Lab support
Since 1966, our lab in Krefeld has been performing testing to support our innovation pipeline and customers in the paper and board industry. With our experience and lab equipment, we can perform starch evaluation and cooking which includes, but is not limited to viscosity profiles, RAPS, color, and foaming behavior. Our specialized coating lab is focusing on the preparation, evaluation and fine-tuning of coating-color recipes, rheology studies, and applications. We also have microscopic and physical paper testing capabilities to evaluate paper, starch powder, and paste. Furthermore, we can assess paper physical qualities such as printing, optical, and strength properties.
Equipment consultancy
In order to fully and safely exploit the benefits of starch, proper equipment and use conditions are required. From starch storage, to transfer & handling, to starch slurry preparation, starch cooking, enzymatic conversion and starch spraying, we can advise our customers on what is the most suitable equipment and set-up for their specific needs. Furthermore, we support them with temporary trial equipment that can be directly shipped and set up by our experienced team.
